Away from the winter weather in the Benelux, Team SD Worx has started the second training camp of the year near Denia. With temperatures around 18 degrees Celsius, the team is together for the second time at the Costa Blanca.
The team met for the first time at the beginning of January. “Due to the late 2020 Corona season and travel restrictions in December, we canceled the team meetings in December,” says sports manager Danny Stam. “That is why we left for Spain extra early in January. That training camp was ideal for laying a good foundation. Furthermore, everyone could get to know each other well over here. We also had to take photos and videos for the sponsors. Therefore, those were very busy days.”
The team has rented a house near Denia until the end of February. After the first training period, several riders were able to stay in Spain so easily, while others went home. Stam: “Having your own place during this period of the year works very well. It also strengthens the bond between the girls.”
In this way, the newcomers could also be integrated into the team. Elena Cecchini, Niamh Black-Fisher, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, Nikola Noskova, Roxane Fournier, Anna Shackley and Demi Vollering switched to the Dutch team last winter, which has an even more international character through these transfers.
“Anna Shackley was missing during the first training camp because at that time it was impossible to travel from the UK to Spain due to the Corona restrictions,” Stam continues. “At the moment we are complete with the whole team. The training camp lasts ten days, but there is the possibility to stay longer. The trainings will now be more intensive. In the coming weeks we will lay the final basis for the 2021 season. Normally we could go straight to the Tour of Valencia, but this stage race has unfortunately been canceled. As a result, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad will be our first race of the year.”
Ahead of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the digital team presentation of Team SD Worx will take place in the Center Tour of Flanders on Tuesday 23 February at 4 p.m. CET. That day, the team also explores the final of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in the morning hours.
