Lorena Wiebes takes fourth win in a row in Scheldeprijs

"I want to match the record and who knows, maybe break it"

There is still no measure of Lorena Wiebes in the sprint. The Dutchwoman was protected by her teammates all day and then sought her own way in the final kilometer. She started from the wheel of Charlotte Kool and sprinted powerfully to her fourth victory in a row in the Scheldeprijs. With that, she still remains the only rider to have the race on her palmares. After all, she won all editions. "I am happy that I was able to show that I still have a strong sprint," said Lorena Wiebes.

Lorena Wiebes: "The team dropped me off perfectly in the last kilometer. Our plan was to ride safely in front from the local laps on. The intention was that we were really in the front for the last ten kilometers, because that's where crashes happened in the past. We put energy into that rather than risk possibly being late. At one kilometer from the finish I was first in Chiara Consonni's wheel, but I changed to Charlotte Kool's wheel. We put on almost simultaneously and from there I was able to sprint straight to the finish. I'm happy to win this race for the fourth time in a row. I like the fact that I was able to show that I'm still a pure sprint star as well and that I didn't compromise on my sprint."

"My victory gesture was again a reference to Jan Smit. In the Tour of Drenthe I pictured the song 'My Guitar.' With the team we have something with Jan Smit and this was Birdless. I still have to think about the next victory gesture. (laughs)"

"Marcel Kittel has won the Scheldeprijs five times, I would like to match that record and who knows, maybe even break it. It's nice that we came out so strong as a team. Especially after Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, where we weren't sharp enough at some points. This only gives us more motivation to finish in the upcoming races. Starting with Paris-Roubaix hopefully, which is an important goal for our team. The fact that we won the Scheldeprijs gives confidence for Saturday."
