Demi Vollering wins omnipotent in Brabantse Pijl

"Confirmation that I can also go on the attack successfully"

Team SD Worx strikes again. In a rainy and difficult Brabantse Pijl it was Demi Vollering who triumphed. With 30km to go, Vollering went on the attack with Pauliena Rooijakkers. With an ultimate acceleration on the Moskesstraat, Vollering also threw her only remaining competitor overboard. After a solo of about ten kilometres, Vollering triumphed, opening her account this season. "It's a really good feeling to have my first win."

After her second place in the Amstel Gold Race, Demi Vollering was asked where she wanted to take her sporting revenge. "As soon as possible," was her answer. The 25 year old Dutch rider kept her word. In the next race, Brabantse Pijl, she successfully rounded off an attack, good for the fifth win of the season for Team SD Worx. 

"I was really looking forward to this race. Before the start I was reminded by a lot of people of last year's denouement, where I thought I'd won in a sprint but the finish photo decided otherwise. Add to that my second places in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Amstel Gold Race this season and you can understand how happy I am about this win", Demi Vollering said.

Vollering's tactical approach to the race was different than usual. "I wanted to race in a different way by going in a breakaway or attacking on my own. The dream scenario was that I would arrive solo. In the really big races you often don't have the space to race more playfully and test things. It was nice to take the initiative now and to race on instinct. This win is a confirmation for me that I can also finish it off in a breakaway and that I don't have to rely only on my sprint."

Demi Vollering has been riding consistently and strongly throughout the spring, but a personal win was missing. "That I can get to my big goals in the Ardennes with a win gives me a very good feeling. In the Amstel Gold Race I was able to keep up well on the climbs, but those are short periods with a high wattage. In the Brabantse Pijl I got the confirmation that I can also develop a hard tempo over a longer distance. When was I confident of winning? Not until one kilometre from the finish, when I survived the last climb well."

Sports manager Danny Stam was also not immediately reassured. "The suspense remained for a long time. The lead of Rooijakkers and Demi was between 45 seconds and a minute. We knew that there would be counterattacks on the Moskesberg, so we sent Demi ahead. When I then saw how much power she developed... She immediately took 25 seconds on Rooijakkers. That was impressive. She was in good form all day. On Sunday she just missed out on the Amstel Gold Race. Add to that last year's miscalculation in the Brabantse Pijl and there's no wonder that she was really on edge. This is a very nice way to get revenge."

"The win in Brabantse Pijl will give extra wings. The altitude training has done her good. Hopefully we can continue this line to the Walloon classics," Stam concluded.
