Race Report: Demi Vollering sprints to second place in Amstel Gold Race

18 April 2021

It was a early wake-up this morning, as the start of the race was at 8:30 at the top of the heroic Cauberg. After a neutralized start, the race exploded soon when a bigger group get ahead with Niamh Fisher-Black.

All our other riders were in the second group and set the pace very high to make this group smaller. With great teamwork of them all, and the situation in the peloton it never was a boring race. During the last climb of the Cauberg, Kasia Niewiadoma and Elisa Longo Borghini get a small gap but with thanks to the efforts of Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio a small group with Demi Vollering could catch them.

Vollering had still such a strong sprint that Marianne Vos was doubting for a few seconds if she had won the race, but soon there was the confirmation about the second place for Vollering.

“No, I am not disappointed, my first place will probably come sometime. I am very happy now! It's no shame to lose from Marianne Vos. It was a very tough race and I'm glad to be on the podium after all. I felt really good at the beginning, but halfway race and after a lot of work I felt the fatigue set in. Fortunately, I got through it and was able to ride a good final.” Vollering reacts after the finish.
