Orange jersey and third in GC for Van der Breggen in Emakumeen Bira

22 May 2018

Anna van der Breggen finished the inaugural Women’s WorldTour Emakumeen Bira with a third place in the GC and as the winner of the orange jersey for the most consistent rider. The Olympic champion was part of a fourteen-rider chase group that couldn’t keep Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton-Scott) from taking the stage win and GC win.

On the Urkiola climb, around 55 kilometers from the finish line, Spratt made her move along with teammate Georgia Williams, Ane Santesteban (Alé Cipollini), Aafke Soet (WNT) and Eider Merino (Movistar).

Spratt dropped the others and was never to be seen again until after the finish line. Van der Breggen bridged the gap to the chasers as did some others, like Annemiek van Vleuten, Spratt’s teammate who was the overall leader going into stage four, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Cervélo-Bigla) and Sabrina Stultiens (Waowdeals).

The group swelled to fourteen in total, but at the final bonus sprint of the day, Spratt led by over 2’20”. It was more than enough to overtake teammate Van Vleuten in the GC, as Spratt was only 1’37” down after stage three.

Olga Zabelinskaya (Cogeas) and Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5) did a last attempt to prevent Spratt from taking the double by attacking from the chase group, but their effort came too late. Spratt won the stage and the GC when she arrived solo back in Iurreta.

With her efforts in the chase group, Van der Breggen jumped to the top of the consistency classification, for which she was awarded the orange jersey at the final podium ceremony. She also finished third in the GC, sharing the podium with Spratt and Van Vleuten in first and second place.

There was also another purple jersey for Van der Breggen, who remains the leader in the Women’s WorldTour classification after twelve rounds. The next Women’s WorldTour event is the OVO Energy Women’s Tour in June.
