Marie Schreiber impresses in her first WorldTour races

"It is an honour to develop myself within a team like Team SD Worx"

Marie Schreiber has had a real baptism of fire as an elite star. The 20-year-old Luxembourger rode her first WorldTour races as an elite rider in Vuelta Femenina, Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos. "It was an intense racing block. I feel I made a lot of progression. My teammates pushed me to go to the limit and redirected me in the races. That's how I got better every day," Schreiber looks back.

In Spain, you competed for the first time for Team SD Worx. How do you look back on those first three stage races?

"This was a nice introduction to racing at the very highest level. It was an intense race block. There wasn't a single quiet day in it. Every day was full of racing. My first day of racing with Team SD Worx in the Vuelta Femenina is less than a month behind me, but it feels like it was ages ago. In the first few days in the Vuelta Femenina, I didn't feel very good, but I persevered under the impetus of my teammates. They pushed me and I felt I was growing in the race. In those seven race days, we got a bit of everything. So it was a nice experience and I learned a lot."

After which, in Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos, you immediately did a lot of leading work for the team. How did you make that progression so quickly?

"In those races I could immediately put into practice what I had learnt in the Vuelta Femenina. I was very happy that I could help the team and that I was able to contribute my part in the victories of Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser and Lorena Wiebes. Demi and Lorena constantly encouraged me in the race and explained to me why certain things were happening, so I learn to read the course better. It's an absolute honour to develop myself in the best team in the world."

What is your highlight of the past three weeks?

"The final stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. I was in the very first breakaway, which also included two riders who posed a threat to the general classification. That's why it was important to be in that breakaway. After the regrouping, I rode seventy kilometres in front of the peloton together with Lorena Wiebes. We controlled the whole stage as a team. Nobody from the other teams tried anything. I suffered, but it was fantastic to be part of a great team performance in this way. That only motivates you more towards future races."

You have now ridden three races with Team SD Worx. Do you have an explanation for the team's successful season?

"This group is special. Everyone is racing for each other. There is one clear goal and everyone goes flat out for that. Every rider is 100 per cent committed to the team interest. We win together and that makes it so special every time. Winning also makes you win more. It makes you feel strong and you know what it feels like to win. In the final, that gives you the drive to give that little extra. I am already looking forward to riding more races with Team SD Worx. Now follows a short rest period. That's just as well, because I can feel my legs after this Spanish block." (laughs)
