Majerus third in second stage OVO Energy Women’s Tour

14 June 2018

Christine Majerus finished in third place in the second stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour behind stage winner Coryn Rivera and European champion Marianne Vos. In the tough, hilly stage from Rushden to Daventry, the Luxembourg champion was part of a large leading group that also included Amy Pieters.  After stage two Amy Pieters is fourth in the overall classification, while Majerus moved up to fifth place.

The last forty kilometers of the stage was the toughest with no less than three climbs of which two times Newnham Hill (16%). The top of the last ascent was in the final three kilometers.

Majerus looks back with a good feeling on today’s third place. "The stage was very difficult. More difficult than I thought. Especially the last forty kilometers were very heavy with twice Newnham Hill. That climb was very steep and brutal. Amy and I managed to be in the front group after the second ascent. I tried to start the sprint in a good position but I did not have much energy left. As a team we tried to attack on the local circuit but we did not manage to get away. I am very happy with my third place.”

Tomorrow the OVO Energy Women's Tour will go to Royal Leamington Spa. The third stage with start in Atherstone is a copy of the stage of last year and is a little longer than today. Last year the stage was won in the sprint by Chloe Hosking. The third stage over 151 kilometers is the longest stage of the entire week and is quite unpredictable.
