Marlen Reusser looks forward to starting in Gent-Wevelgem with race number one

Reusser cherishes first classic win

22/03/2024

In a true Flandrien edition of Gent-Wevelgem, Marlen Reusser proved unbeatable last season. Neither rain nor wind bothered her. The Swiss hard rider shook a solo of no less than 40 kilometers out of her legs, after which she triumphed solo in Wevelgem. "I cherish that victory. It was my very first big classic that I won. It tastes like more. I'm looking forward to pinning on the jersey number one in this spring classic."

"I started the season super in Valencia," Marlen Reusser enthuses. "I felt strong and took my first win of the season and the overall victory there. But unfortunately I then had to deal with COVID, which caused me to miss the opening weekend. Due to the illness, I could not complete my training schedule. To my positive surprise, I had good legs in Trofeo Alfredo Binda. I hope to get that confirmation also in Gent-Wevelgem. Because I love the classic spring."

"Gent-Wevelgem has a special place for me. It was my very first win in a big classic. Especially the way it was very special. I still get happy when I think back on it. It was a beautiful day and I am keen to put in a good performance again this year. I took important steps in 2023. I learned to listen better to my body and adjust plans if necessary. I also feel that I am still getting better. I don't think I have reached the maximum yet. In 2024 I have two very important commitments: the individual time trial at the Olympics in Paris and the battle against the chronometers at the World Championships in my home country of Switzerland. I also hope to continue my evolution as a classification rider. But first the focus is on the classics. I love the Tour of Flanders and its special atmosphere. And as mentioned, Gent-Wevelgem has a special extra meaning for me."

Sport director Lars Boom hopes for a tough edition of Gent-Wevelgem. "A tough edition would be nice. I hope the weather forecast is right. If it starts to blow effectively and maybe some rain, the race will be harder. That will be to our advantage. The extra days of rest were necessary. Our team is healthy again and ready to race. Marlen Reusser already had good legs after her illness in the Trofeo Binda. She is eager to do her best again. Lorena Wiebes is also hoping for the top scaffold. And Lotte Kopecky, as world champion in her own country, is of course also super motivated. It's an advantage that we have several irons in the fire."

"The Kemmelberg makes Gent-Wevelgem tougher than Brugge-De Panne, for example. With the predicted wind, it will be watchful in De Moeren. There you always have to be attentive and make sure you don't lose the race there. Maybe we can create a nice situation where we throw some riders overboard. But even after that, it can still break into pieces. We hope to keep the number one in the team," Boom concluded.
