The prize for the best rider in the youth classification of the Giro d'Italia Donne was won last Sunday by 20-year-old Niamh Fisher-Black. The rider from New Zealand took the lead in this classification during the first stage due to to the second place of Team SD Worx in the team time trial. Her lead in the youth classification was never less than 35 seconds.
Despite the work for her three teammates Anna van der Breggen, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Demi Vollering, who occupy the top three of the general classification, Fisher-Black rode a consistent race and set a great performance with a tenth place finish in the queen stage to the top of Monte Matajur and a ninth place in the general classification.
She caused a lot of reactions because of this performance. Both her teammates and various media spoke full of praise for the young rider!
We spoke to Fisher-Black in her European home of Girona: “I'm just coming of ten days of hard racing, so I'm pretty tired now. But obviously I'm really happy to have taken away the white jersey from the Giro d'Italia Donne and to just be a part of the team win in the team's classification and being part of Anna her win in the GC which is really cool. ”
“And also, the top 3 for the team in the GC and a ninth place for me which I never could expected myself to get top 10 in the Giro d'Italia Donne so soon. I was riding in supportive to three of my teammates, so I think it's really special. It sort of gets me all the confidence for the coming years to see what I can do. I guess I didn't really see so much in the white jersey at first, but then my teammates remind me that it is really special to win the white jersey. It's also nice to have something take home myself, which is really cool!”
