EuroChamps silver for Van der Breggen after close finish in the time trial

9 August 2018

Anna van der Breggen has won a silver medal at the European time trial championship in Glasgow yesterday, only two seconds removed from gold. Ellen van Dijk (Team Sunweb) prolongued her title to win the event for the third year in a row, Trixi Worrack (Canyon-SRAM) came in third.

It’s Van der Breggen’s fifth silver medal in a time trial championship. She won silver earlier this year at the Dutch time trial championships, earned worlds silver on the time trial in 2015 and 2017 and also previously at the European time trial championships in 2016.

“I'm a bit disappointed," said Van der Breggen. "I've gathered enough second places already. But I am really satisfied with how I rode my time trial.”

The 31-kilometer long time trial through Glasgow was a challenging city course and was made even more difficult by the heavy rain that came down. Especially the surface right after the start was very slippery, so everyone had to start their time trial with caution.

“Of course with these wet roads it can become slippery in the corners, which was difficult because we hadn’t had the chance yet to do a recon in full speed without any traffic," said Van der Breggen. “But that was the same for everyone, so everyone had to deal with that.”

Van der Breggen and Van Dijk started their time trials only five minutes apart, both overtaking several riders during their race. It was a tight battle until the finish to see who would take the title. Van der Breggen crossed the line after 41'41”, Van Dijk eventually stopped the clock just two seconds earlier.

Van der Breggen looks back at the European championships with mixed feelings, after she was in a good position to win the road race until the peloton brought her and Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5, Italy) back in the last kilometer of the race, and now her second place finish in the time trial.

“I’m somewhat disappointed about my results at the European championships," concluded Van der Breggen. Nevertheless, it was Van der Breggen’s 13th podium finish of the year and it's one again a strong performance by the Olympic road champion in an international field.

Van der Breggen will find herself again on her time trial bike this weekend, this time back in Boels-Dolmans outfiit. She rides the team time trial in Vargarda on Saturday and will also start in the road race.
