Deignan sidelined following appendix removal

31 August 2017

Lizzie Deignan was diagnosed with appendicitis and had surgery to remove her appendix on early Thursday morning. The British road champion had been competing at the Boels Rental Ladies Tour when she fell ill.

“I’ll be taking the rest of the season day-by-day at this point,” Deignan added. “It’s not ideal but I’ll be alright. I appreciate the show of support.”

Deignan’s withdrawal from the Boels Rental Ladies Tour leaves Boel-Dolmans Cycling Team one rider short in its home tour. The now five-rider squad has two riders in the top ten on general classification following the stage three time trial with Olympic road champion Anna van der Breggen in fourth place and Dutch road champion Chantal Blaak in seventh place.

“We’ll miss Lizzie in the race, but the most important thing is that she gets healthy again,” said Boels-Dolmans team manager Danny Stam. “It’s still possible she could race again this season, but that’s simply not something we know at this time.”
