Outgoing winner Demi Vollering sprints to second place in Brabantse Pijl

"I just wasn't good enough"

In the Brabantse Pijl, Team SD Worx wanted to defend Demi Vollering's jersey number one. The Dutch World Tour formation therefore made the race hard by attacking in turns. This left a depleted group sprinting for the win. Silvia Persico was faster than Demi Vollering, who took the 22nd podium finish of the season for Team SD Worx with her second place. "I would have liked a second win in a row, but I sprinted too early. My legs ran out a bit too fast."

Team SD Worx's race plan was soon clear: thin out the peloton by attacking in turns. With a fierce acceleration on Hertstraat, Marlen Reusser reduced the leading group to five riders. Only Silvia Persico, Shirin van Anrooij, Margot van Pachtenbeke and Elisa Chabbey could follow the Swiss' pace. On Moskesstraat, defending winner Demi Vollering bridged, together with Liane Lippert. "I felt good. The fact that I could close the gap so well gives a nice feeling. Only in the last hour I ate too little. As a result, I got a hunger pang. So that wasn't very smart."

On the Brusselsesteenweg, the group would sprint for the win. "I started too early. There was wind up front and my legs ran out a bit too fast. So I was just not good enough to win. Still, I keep a nice feeling about the Brabantse Pijl. My spring is going well, with a win in the Strade Bianche and Dwars door Vlaanderen and a second place in Ronde van Vlaanderen and Brabantse Pijl. So I am heading towards the Amstel Gold Race - Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège with confidence. These are my main goals this season, so I hope I can continue the good form," Vollering concluded.
