Boels-Dolmans looking forward to the Swedish races

11 August 2017

The world team time trial champions will be in action this evening at the Women's WorldTour Vårgårda team time trial. This season, Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team has won every team time trial they entered and they plan to continue that winning streak tonight. The Vårgårda road race follows on Sunday and is also part of the Women's World Tour.

The Vårgårda team tour and road race form the fifteenth and sixteenth event in the Women's World Tour. Since her victory in the Giro Rosa, Anna van der Breggen has reiterated the overall ranking in the Women's World Tour, with 59 points lead at Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-Scott).

Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team also leads the team's classification in the Women's World Tour, with nearly 1000 points ahead of Team Sunweb.

As the only on-going crew rally and about six weeks ahead of the World Cup, the Vårgårda team-time ritual has always functioned as a general rehearsal for that World Cup in recent years. When Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team won the team run in Vårgårda last year, it was a big boost for the World Cup, which eventually won the team. Boels-Dolmans then finished the year as best team in the UCI ranking, with the winner of the Women's World Tour in the ranks and as world champions on the team rally.

In the road race there has always been a small group sprinting on the finish line. Last year it was a relatively large group when nine riders arrived at the finish line. Last 2011, a mass print of a well-known peloton was won by Annemiek van Vleuten.

The course of both the team time trial and the road race have been the same for years. The riders who have been professional cyclists for a number of years will know it by heart. So that is not the challenge. The challenge lies in the fact that this knowledge and experience is present at every team. A thorough recon won’t make a lot of difference with these races.

"We are looking forward to our ‘dress rehearsal’," said sports director Danny Stam. "Last year was the first time we won Vårgårda's team time trial and we are obviously hoping to repeat that win."

As the defending champions, Boels-Dolmans will be the last team to roll off the start ramp tonight. The first team will take to the start at 5.30pm CET, Boels-Dolmans will start an hour later, at 6.30pm CET.

When Chantal Blaak won the road race in 2014, she beat Amy Pieters in a three-up sprint. Boels-Dolmans likes to race aggressively, and Stam therefore expects a small group to contest the win on the line again this year.

The road race will be broadcasted live this year in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. All details about the broadcast can be found on

You’ll have to follow the team time trial through social media though. The organization's Twitter account is @vargardawwt, but your best bet it to follow the Women's WorldTour hashtag #UCIWWT and the race hashtag #vargarda for all information.
