Blaak wins Dutch National Road Championships

30 June 2018

Chantal Blaak has become the Dutch National Road Champion for a second consecutive year. The World Champion of Boels-Dolmans attacked in the final ten kilometer of the 141 kilometer race from a leading group of ten riders and soloed to the victory in Hoogerheide.  Amy Pieters completed the Boels-Dolmans hegemony by sprinting to second place. For Blaak it is her third title in a row after also becoming World Champion in Bergen, Norway last September.

The race was opened up by European champion Marianne Vos with fifty kilometer to go after a leading group with Amy Pieters was reeled in. The maximum lead of Vos and Esther van Veen was more than a minute but was chased down in the penultimate lap due to Boels-Dolmans and Team Sunweb. Inside ten kilometer to go Blaak’s second attempt was the winning one after lots of other attacks didn’t succeed. For Blaak it is her third (individual) win of the season. She previously won the Amstel Gold Race and a stage in the Healthy Ageing Tour.

"Unbelievable. I did not expect this at all, "says Blaak. "And then also first and second. Before I was never a champion, and now I win the National title for a second consecutive year. The way we raced today really suits me. Amy, Anna and I all benefit from a hard race. The course and especially the heat made it very tough. In the final I just thought I’ll try it again and see what happens. I got a gap and I knew I had to finish it.  Winning here in the rainbow jersey is very special. I am very happy with this title. I do not see myself becoming world champion again in Innsbruck, so it's nice to race in the national jersey next year. "

Teammate Amy Pieters was also satisfied with her silver medal. "I am satisfied with my race," says Pieters. "I felt super good. Of course I would prefer to win myself, but if you are second I would rather be second after my team mate. It's nice to win the Nationals again as a team and my silver medal only makes the performance of Chantal even more special. "
