Team SD Worx-Protime took control of the first stage in Itzulia and took the victory with Mischa Bredewold. Marlen Reusser piloted Demi Vollering and Mischa Bredewold towards the final hundreds of meters, after which Demi Vollering did a super lead-out for Bredewold. She put the icing on the cake by winning the sprint. Vollering finished third. Thus Team SD Worx-Protime remains undefeated so far in Itzulia Basqua country. “It is an honor to continue the victory series of Demi Vollering and Marlen Reusser of 2023 and 2022,” said Bredewold, who also received the first leader's jersey.

Mischa Bredewold: “I am happy, relieved and very grateful. The riders and staff believed in me all day and you need that confidence. I felt good and was able to save myself during the stage. I didn't have to do any extra effort because the girls protected me so well. It was a technical last 500 meters.  We knew timing would be important. We went on at the right time and I got a super lead-out. In the last corner at four hundred meters from the end, Team dsm-firmenich Post NL came up on the left and for a moment I lost Demi's wheel. I stressed for a moment, but luckily there was room to get back into position. Because Demi also sprinted full speed ahead, nobody could get past. To get a lead-out from such a strong team is fantastic. I'm glad I was able to finish it off. It's really crazy that Team SD Worx-Protime has won all seven stages so far since the arrival of this stage race in 2022. I am honored to also be on the list alongside Demi Vollering and Marlen Reusser.”

Sport director Anna van der Breggen: “Our plan worked out perfectly today. The climbs were not too tough, and the finish was one that should suit our fast riders. This was also a finish that would suit Blanka Vas, but she wasn't feeling one hundred percent after being a little sick the past few days. So we pulled the card of Mischa Bredewold. The finish was on a well-run wide road, but the many turns made it technical. The key was not to arrive too early. The idea was to get to the front as late as possible in order to be first into the corners with the right high speed. This succeeded perfectly thanks to the effort of Marlen Reusser. After which Demi dropped Mischa off perfectly.”

“This stage victory is a nice confidence boost for Mischa. She was already riding well in the Vuelta, but she also had a slight cold. She recovered well toward the end of the Vuelta. The rest days did her good. This was a great opportunity for her and she took it. Tomorrow's stage has somewhat the same profile as today, only the climb is trickier. If Mischa survives, she will have another chance. But it is also quite possible that an elite group will stay away if they work together. Demi Vollering has already shown that she is very strong. It is therefore nice that she was able to help a teammate to success with such a lead-out. With the overall victory in La Vuelta Femenina in our pocket, it is nice racing here.”
